The word "brat" hit the room like a slap.
My mom stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor.
Claire's hand flew to her mouth.
My dad, who had not said a word since Olivia pointed her finger, slowly set down his glass.
I pulled Olivia closer and looked at Madison.
"Say that again," I said quietly.
"I want to make sure I heard you correctly."
Madison straightened her back.
"She is four years old, Ethan.
She is dramatic.
She wants attention.
This is what children do when a new person enters the home."
"She described a closet," Claire said, her voice tight.
"She described the dark.
She is four.
Where does a four-year-old learn to say something like that?"
Madison turned to Claire with that same smooth smile.
"She watches television.
She has an imagination.
I am not going to stand here and be acc*sed by a toddler."
But Olivia lifted her head from my chest.
"The bunny knows," she whispered.
Everyone went still.
"What did you say, sweetheart?" my mom asked, crouching down to her level.
"My bunny.
She hid it in the high place so I couldn't reach it when I cried.
She said if I told Daddy, she would throw it away forever."
I looked at Madison.
For just one second — one single second — the smile was completely gone.
And what was underneath it was something I had never seen on her face before.
