Chapter 2: The Call I Was Never Supposed to Receive

Part 2 ⬇️
The paramedics took Irene on a stretcher.
She was conscious but barely.
She kept whispering my name.
I rode with her to the hospital, holding her hand the whole way.
She made it.
The baby made it.
But in the ER waiting room, something happened that I wasn't prepared for.
My phone rang.
It was our housekeeper, Rosa.
She had worked for us for six years.
"Mr.
Wentworth," she said, her voice shaking.
"I should have told you sooner.
I'm so sorry."
"Rosa, what is it?"
She was crying now.
"This wasn't the first time.
Margaret has been doing this for weeks.
Every time you traveled, she would come into the bedroom and scream at Irene.
She told her if she didn't sign certain documents, she would make sure you never believed anything Irene said."
I couldn't speak.
"There's more," Rosa whispered.
"Two weeks ago, I saw Carla go through Irene's medical bag.
She removed something from it.
I don't know what.
But Irene was very sick the next morning."
The line went quiet.
Then Rosa said the one thing that made my hands go numb.
"Mr.
May you like
Wentworth…
I think they knew about the baby before you did."
