Chapter 2: The Bruises She Never Told Me About

Part 2 ⬇️
The paramedics took Irene on a stretcher.
She was conscious but barely.
She kept reaching for my hand and whispering, "Don't leave me.
Please don't leave me."
I rode with her to the hospital.
The whole way, she cried without making a sound.
At the ER, while the doctors examined her, a nurse pulled me aside.
"Mr.
Wentworth — your wife has older bruising.
On her arms.
Her ribs.
This wasn't the first time."
I couldn't speak.
"She told us she fell.
Twice.
We noted it but couldn't act without her consent." The nurse paused.
"She was protecting someone."
I already knew who.
Back at the house, the police found something Margaret hadn't expected — a second phone.
Hidden inside the suitcase lining.
Unlocked.
The detective called me at the hospital.
"Mr.
Wentworth, there are months of messages on this device.
Between your mother and someone we didn't expect." He went quiet for a moment.
"Is your wife's name on any of your property titles?"
"Yes," I said.
"Everything is joint."
Another silence.
"Then you need to come down here.
Tonight."
I looked through the glass at Irene, pale and exhausted, one hand resting on her stomach.
She had stayed silent for months.
And I still didn't know why.

What was on that second phone — and who had Margaret been messaging all along?
The full truth is darker than anyone expected.
