Chapter 2: What the Letter Was Really Worth

Part 2 ⬇️

The ballroom went completely still.

Daniel laid the folder open on the nearest table.

I could see pages filled with numbers, signatures, legal stamps.

My mother stood quietly beside him, hands folded, the torn pieces of her letter still scattered on the floor at her feet.

"What is this?" Vanessa demanded.

Her voice had lost its confidence.

Daniel didn't look at her.

He looked at me.

"Ethan, your mother is the sole owner of Hale Industrial.

Has been for eleven years.

Your father signed the controlling shares over to her after his first heart surgery.

She has managed every major asset decision since."

I turned to my father.

He nodded once, slowly.

"We didn't want it to change how people treated us," he said quietly.

"Or who came around."

Vanessa's face had gone a strange color.

"That's impossible.

You drive an old car.

You shop at discount stores.

You—"

"I live the way I choose," Mom said.

She wasn't angry.

She sounded almost tired.

Richard stepped forward.

"Evelyn, surely we can discuss—"

"The transfer is already complete," Daniel said, cutting him off.

"This morning, Mrs.

Hale moved her primary assets into a protected trust." He paused.

"Ethan is listed as the sole beneficiary."

Vanessa spun toward me.

"Ethan, tell her to reverse it."

I looked at her — really looked at her — for the first time all evening.

"Why would I do that?"

Her expression shifted into something I had never seen before.

And that's when her father grabbed her arm and whispered something that made her go completely white.

---

What did Richard whisper to Vanessa — and what does she know about that trust that she hasn't said out loud yet?
