Chapter 2: What the Document Said

I took the next train alone, sitting by the window with my hand resting over my stomach and Luke's messages still coming in one after another.
*You're overreacting.*
*This is embarrassing.*
*Call me back right now.*
I turned the phone face down and closed my eyes.
By the time I reached Boston, there were eleven missed calls.
The twelfth came just as I stepped into the hotel lobby.
I answered it.
"Clover." His voice had shifted.
Softer now.
Careful.
"Let's not do this before the biggest deal of the year.
Come to the dinner tonight.
We'll talk after."
"I'll be at the dinner," I said.
"I told you I would."
"Good." He exhaled.
"So we're fine."
"I didn't say that."
I ended the call and opened my email.
Our lead contact at Scott Global had written to confirm the morning meeting.
His message was addressed to me directly — *Dear Clover* — because every conversation, every proposal, every late-night revision had gone through me.
Luke had attended two calls.
Both times, he had let me do the talking.
Then I saw the second email.
It had arrived four days ago, forwarded from our company's legal department.
I had been too busy preparing for Boston to open it.
My hand went still on the phone.
It was a document.
A draft.
And Luke's name was on it — not mine.
What he had been quietly arranging had nothing to do with Camellia.
It had to do with the baby.
