Chapter 2: What Was in the Folder

Part 2 ⬇️
---
The library was quiet.
Matthew closed the door behind us and set a folder on the table without a word.
"I want you to look at something," he said.
Inside was a copy of a participation agreement.
My name.
My signature.
The Harborstone Holdings project.
But the redemption date on this copy was different from the one I had signed during my divorce.
"That date was changed," Matthew said quietly.
"The version you were given during the settlement was not the original."
My hands went still on the paper.
"What does that mean?"
"It means your interest was never redeemed.
It was transferred.
Quietly.
Into a holding structure that Grant controls to this day."
The door opened.
Grant stood in the frame, still in his wedding suit, jaw tight.
"Mara.
Whatever he's told you—"
"How much?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
"Grant." My voice was steady.
"How much is still in my name?"
He looked at Matthew.
Then back at me.
And for the first time since I had walked into that glasshouse, his composure completely broke.
"You were never supposed to be here today," he said.
Behind him, in the hallway, I could hear Celeste asking someone where her father had gone.
She had no idea what her new husband had done.
Or what he was about to lose.
