Chapter 2: What She Signed While She Was Still Bleeding

Part 2 ⬇️
Evan's smirk lasted exactly four minutes.
That was how long it took for his company card to decline when he tried to order another bottle of wine through the restaurant app on his phone.
He stared at the screen.
Tapped it again.
Then looked up at me.
"There's some kind of error," he said.
"No," I said.
"There isn't."
Gloria set down her glass.
Something shifted in her expression — not confusion.
Recognition.
As if she had always known this moment was possible and had simply been hoping it wouldn't come.
Emily hadn't moved from the sink.
But her shoulders had stopped shaking.
Evan's voice dropped.
"What did you do?"
"I made a phone call," I said.
"The same one I should have made months ago."
He stood up slowly.
"You have no right to touch anything in this house.
I am Emily's husband.
I am the one who—"
"You are the one," I said quietly, "who has been using a trust you never owned, a salary you never earned, and a home that was never yours."
The room went very still.
Then Gloria said something that made Emily grab the edge of the counter to steady herself.
"Tell her, Evan." Her voice was flat.
Almost bored.
"Tell Margaret what you had Emily sign three weeks after Lily was born."
Emily turned slowly from the sink.
"What is she talking about?" she whispered.
"Evan.
What did I sign?"
