Chapter 2: Something Closer to Calculation

She didn't just nod once.

She nodded slowly, like she had been carrying that secret for so long it had become part of her.

"He said you'd be upset," she whispered.

"He said it would cause a fight.

He said if I told you, it would make things worse at home."

I couldn't speak.

The doctor gave me a moment.

Then he said, quietly, "The imaging today shows something we need to follow up on urgently.

Given the delay, I'd like to move quickly."

I took her hand.

It was ice cold.

On the drive home, she fell asleep in the passenger seat.

I sat at a red light staring at nothing, my phone on my lap.

Then it lit up.

A text from my husband: *"Why is the school saying you signed her out?

What's going on?"*

I set the phone face down.

When we got home, he was already standing in the kitchen.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he said.

I looked at him for a long moment.

"I could ask you the same thing."

His jaw tightened.

Something shifted in his expression — not guilt, not concern.

Something closer to calculation.

"I handled it," he said.

"It wasn't serious."

"The doctor disagrees."

He went very still.

Then he said something that made my bl00d run cold — something I never expected a father to say about his own child...
