Chapter 2: What the Plant Was Hiding

Part 2

One of the officers stepped toward Beatrice.

"Ma'am, who told you something was found under the sofa?"

Beatrice's eyes darted sideways — just for a second.

Then she straightened up and pointed at Clara.

"A mother knows when something is wrong with her son.

And I know what kind of woman she is."

Clara's hands were shaking, but her voice stayed steady.

"No one called you, Beatrice.

No one texted you.

The police only arrived an hour ago.

So how did you know?"

Scott lowered his phone slightly.

Something crossed his face — not grief.

Panic.

The lead detective pulled Beatrice aside.

While they spoke in low voices, Clara noticed Scott glancing toward the potted plant in the corner.

Not at the bag.

Not at the officers.

At the plant.

The same plant Beatrice had brought over four days ago.

Clara walked to it slowly.

The soil looked recently disturbed near the base.

She reached down and felt something hard and flat pressed beneath the roots.

A small device.

Rectangular.

Blinking once every few seconds.

Mr.

Miller appeared beside her and said nothing for a moment.

"Clara," he said quietly.

"That's a listening device."

Beatrice had been in that apartment four days ago.

She had placed the plant herself.

She had heard everything — Lily's cry, the scratching, the call to 911, every word spoken over that bag.

She hadn't come to find her son.

She had come to make sure Clara took the blame.

What Clara found hidden inside that plant was only the beginning.
