Chapter 2: Family Asks. They Don't Take.

"Yes," I said.

"Please send them up."

Harper's face went white.

"Barbara, wait — you don't have to do this.

This is family."

"Family asks," I said quietly.

"They don't take."

Her mother lowered the dresses slowly.

Her father didn't move.

Nobody in that hallway said a word.

Two minutes later, there was a firm knock at the door.

I opened it myself.

Two security officers stepped inside and looked around the room — the open suitcases, the rearranged closet, the toiletries lined up beside mine in the bathroom.

One of them turned to me.

"Ms.

Parker, are you the registered owner of this unit?"

"I am," I said.

"I have the deed, the management records, and the access log on my phone if you need them."

Harper stepped forward.

"This is a misunderstanding.

She's my mother-in-law.

We're family."

The officer looked at her calmly.

"Are you listed on the property, ma'am?"

She opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

That was when her mother did something I didn't expect.

She sat down on my sofa, crossed her arms, and said, "Harper, just call your husband.

Tell him to fix this."

Harper pulled out her phone with shaking hands.

And in that moment, I realized something I hadn't considered.

My son was going to answer that call.

And he already knew exactly what I had found in that management app.

What Barbara discovered in that app — and what her son had been hiding — is far worse than anyone expected.
