Chapter 2: That Isn't Mom's Card

Dean crossed the room in three steps and grabbed his phone.

"Show me the statement," he said.

His voice was low and tight in a way I had never heard before.

Priscilla crossed her arms.

"Dean, you're overreacting."

"Show me the statement right now."

She handed it over slowly, the way someone does when they already know what the other person is about to find.

Dean scrolled.

His jaw locked.

Then he looked up at his wife and said four words very quietly.

"That isn't Mom's card."

The room went completely still.

I stepped forward.

"What do you mean it isn't my card?"

Dean turned the screen toward me.

The last four digits were ones I didn't recognize.

The name on the account wasn't mine either.

It was a joint account — opened six weeks ago — in both my name and Priscilla's.

"I never agreed to any joint account," I said.

Priscilla's expression shifted.

Not guilt.

Something colder than that.

"You signed the paperwork at the bank in October," she said.

"Don't you remember?

You were updating your beneficiary forms."

I remembered that appointment.

I remembered signing documents.

I had trusted Dean to explain everything I was signing.

I turned to my son.

He couldn't look at me.

What Dean admitted next made my hands go cold.
