Chapter 2: What the Camera Saw

The security manager turned the tablet so everyone could see.
The footage was clear.
Timestamp in the corner.
No gaps.
Sophie had never gone near the gift table.
She had sat in that third-row chair the entire time — fidgeting with the hem of her yellow dress, looking toward the door, waiting for me to come back.
It was Preston who had approached her.
The guests watched in silence as the recording showed him leaning down, saying something close to her ear.
Sophie shook her head.
He reached past her toward the gift table himself — and when he straightened up, his hand was empty.
The brooch was already gone before Sophie ever moved.
"That's not—" Preston started.
"Don't." The security manager's voice was flat.
"There's a second angle."
Margaret's hand dropped from Preston's shoulder.
The second camera showed the gift table directly.
It showed Preston's jacket pocket.
It showed exactly when the brooch went in.
A woman near the back of the room said, quietly but clearly: "He planted it on her."
Sophie looked up at me.
Her temple was still bleeding through the napkin.
"I told you, Mommy," she whispered.
"I told you."
Preston took one step toward the security manager.
"I want that footage deleted.
Do you know who I am?
Do you have any idea what I can do to this venue?"
That was when someone in the crowd raised their phone.
They had been recording the whole time.
