Chapter 2: The Car That Was Already Waiting

Mason arrived within minutes.
He listened without a word.
Then he looked at Sophia.
"The SUV that followed you.
Did it stop anywhere near the estate?"
Sophia's face went pale.
"I don't know.
I didn't look back after we came inside."
Mason glanced at Lorenzo.
Something passed between them.
"I'll check the gate cameras from yesterday afternoon."
He left the room.
Lorenzo stood at the window.
Still.
Quiet.
The kind of quiet that made people nervous.
Emma tugged the edge of his jacket.
"Mr.
DeLuca?"
He looked down.
"Is the lady going to be okay?"
He had no answer.
Three minutes later, Mason returned.
He placed a printed still frame on the desk.
A gray SUV.
Parked sixty meters from the estate gate.
Timestamp: 4:47 p.m.
Yesterday.
Dark windows.
No plate visible.
But in the corner of the frame — a second vehicle.
Black sedan.
Parked further back.
Mason pointed.
"That one didn't follow Sophia.
It was already here."
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
"Someone was watching the estate."
"Yes."
"Before Sophia came home."
"Yes."
The room went silent.
Sophia pressed her hand to her mouth.
Whoever had Isabella — they already knew where Emma and Sophia lived.
Lorenzo looked at Mason.
"Find out who owns that sedan."
Then his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Silence on the line.
Then a woman's voice.
Barely a whisper.
"Lorenzo…
don't trust—"
The call cut off.
