"MOM'S BACK THERE!" / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1: The Knock Behind the Wall

"MOM'S BACK THERE!"

Twelve-year-old Ethan Rowan heard the first faint knock between the silverware and the low conversation of ten relatives at Richard Langford's dinner table.

His mother had been gone for three days.

Richard kept saying she had left the family.

Then the sound came again — from behind the built-in wine rack in Richard's glass-fronted cellar.

Ethan grabbed the heavy brass fireplace poker and struck one thin wooden backing panel.

CRACK.

The bottles shook, but the narrow split showed nothing behind it.

"Ethan!" Aunt Lisa cried.

Richard rushed into the cellar and caught the poker before Ethan could swing again.

"Drop it!"

"Mom's back there!"

Richard tore the poker away and threw it across the carpet.

"Your mother left."

When Ethan reached for the damaged panel, Richard dragged him out of the cellar and held him in front of the family.

"LET ME GO!"

"He's upset," Richard told them.

Aunt Lisa stepped closer.

"Ethan, enough."

Then three unmistakable blows came from behind the rack.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

Every person at the table went silent.

"See?!"

Richard glanced at the family before he looked toward the sound.

"Everybody upstairs."

"Why?" Lisa asked.

Richard had no answer.

Ethan broke free, grabbed the poker, and ran back to the same cracked panel while Richard chased him.

"ETHAN, DON'T!"

The final strike broke one section of wood inward.

Directly behind it was an old narrow service door.

Ethan reached through the broken rack and pulled the handle while Aunt Lisa caught Richard's arm.

Inside the cramped servant passage sat Sarah Langford, alive, with tape across her mouth and her wrists restrained in front of her.

"Mom?!"

Sarah looked at Ethan with relief.

Then her eyes moved past him toward Richard, and relief became fear.

The family finally understood that Sarah had never abandoned her son — and Richard had known exactly where she was.
