Chapter 2: The Photo That Changed Everything

The movers arrived at six in the morning.

Paige stood at the door of the Buckhead penthouse — the one Damian had registered under Carlisle Enterprises but furnished entirely with my money — and watched eight men carry out everything that legally belonged to me.

Every piece of art.

Every document.

Every server drive from the home office.

I stood in the center of the empty living room, still in my hospital discharge clothes, one hand pressed against my chest.

Attorney Harold Vance called at 8 a.m.

"Samantha.

The prenuptial clause is clean.

The North Druid Hills property transfer was unauthorized.

We're filing to freeze the Chloe Danvers account this morning."

"How long before Damian finds out?"

"He'll know the moment his card stops working."

I almost smiled.

Then Paige walked in holding her phone, her face pale.

"Sam.

You need to see this."

It was a photo.

Taken three days before my surgery.

Damian and Chloe.

Sitting across from a man I recognized immediately.

Dr.

Ellison.

My cardiologist.

The three of them.

Together.

Smiling.

My hand dropped from my chest.

"Paige," I said quietly.

"Call Harold back.

Tell him we may need a criminal attorney."

She stared at me.

"Why?"

I looked at the photo one more time.

"Because I don't think my artery ruptured on its own."
