Chapter 1: The Test That Wasn't Hers

Maya was twenty-four, and she had never been so certain that someone else's lie was about to fall on her.

The kitchen was bright that afternoon.

Sunlight poured onto the stone counter, a small white test lay on it, and a paper shopping bag rested on the stool beside the table.

Nothing in the room had any lettering on it.

Her mother, Nicole, forty-eight, in a pink dress, stood with her arms folded and pointed directly at the counter.

Her father, Richard, fifty, in a blue suit jacket, stood by the sink with a glass of water in his hand.

"Tell your father you're pregnant."

Maya's eyes filled.

Her voice trembled, but it held.

"I'm not pregnant.

That test isn't mine."

Nicole did not move.

At that moment, the door opened and Ethan, eight, came in from school with his backpack on both shoulders.

He stopped when he saw the faces.

He looked at the shopping bag, then at his mother, and spoke the way children speak when they have simply noticed something.

"Mommy took that box yesterday."

Richard put the glass down.

He crossed to the counter, reached into the paper bag, and pulled out a folded receipt.

He read it, and his face changed.

"You bought this yesterday."

He reached into the bag again and drew out a single sheet of paper.

It was folded in thirds, and across the top someone had written a name in dark ink.

Richard looked at it for a long moment.

His jaw tightened.

He held it up.

"Whose name is on this?"

May you like

Nicole pressed one hand over her mouth.

Maya stood beside the counter and did not take her eyes off the paper.
