Chapter 2: The Woman Who Wouldn't Break

Carmen arrived at 5:28.
Vincent was already in the kitchen.
He never sat in the kitchen.
In thirty years, not once.
But he was there, at the small wooden table near the window, with two cups of coffee and no explanation.
Carmen stopped in the doorway.
Her coat was still on.
Her bag was still on her shoulder.
She looked at him the way people look at something that shouldn't exist.
"Mr.
Torino."
"Sit down, Carmen."
She didn't move.
"Is it about my work?
If something wasn't done properly, I can—"
"Sit down."
She sat.
He slid the second cup toward her.
She didn't touch it.
"Isabella was here last night," he said.
The color left her face.
"She was in the pantry.
Eating cold pasta off the floor."
Carmen's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
"She wasn't stealing," Vincent said.
"She was hungry."
The silence lasted three full seconds.
Then Carmen stood up so fast the chair scraped back hard against the tile.
"I'll get her.
Right now.
It won't happen again.
I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, please—"
"Carmen."
She stopped.
Her hands were shaking.
"She told me about the medicine."
Carmen's face changed completely.
Not fear this time.
Something worse.
The look of a woman whose last secret had just been found.
Her lips pressed together.
Her chin lifted.
And in that moment, Vincent saw exactly what Isabella had inherited — that same stubborn, quiet dignity that refused to break even when everything else had.
"We don't need anything," Carmen said softly.
"I know you believe that."
"Mr.
Torino—"
"How long have you been giving her your food?"
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
Vincent looked down at the table for a moment.
Then back at her.
"I'm going to ask you something, and I need you to tell me the truth."
Carmen waited.
"How bad is it?"
Her jaw tightened.
Her eyes filled.
She fought it hard.
But one tear escaped anyway — just one — and she turned her face toward the window so he wouldn't see it.
What Vincent said next made her knees nearly give out.
