Chapter 2: She Looked at the Screen and Felt Relief

Vanessa stood there holding her cheek, eyes wide.
The room went completely silent.
Then she laughed again — quieter this time, like she couldn't believe what had just happened.
"You're choosing her over me?" she said.
"Over a child?"
"She is my child," I said.
"And you're done."
Vanessa's expression shifted.
The laugh disappeared.
"You have no idea what you're throwing away," she said.
"No idea."
My sister stepped forward and took Lily from my arms so I could face Vanessa directly.
Lily was still trembling.
Frosting in her hair.
Eyes down.
That image alone told me everything I needed to know.
I told Vanessa to leave.
She picked up her bag slowly.
Too slowly.
Like she was waiting for something.
Then her phone buzzed on the table.
She glanced at the screen — and something crossed her face.
Not anger.
Not shame.
Relief.
She looked at me one last time and said, "You'll understand soon enough."
Then she walked out.
I didn't know what she meant.
Not yet.
But my sister had seen the phone screen.
And the look on her face told me this wasn't over.
