Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

My husband turned the phone toward Marcus.
“There are unexplained transfers from your company,” he said.
“Nearly two million dollars.”
Marcus glanced around at the watching guests.
“This is neither the time nor the place.”
“You made it the place when you approached my wife.”
Chloe’s hand flew to her diamond bracelet.
Marcus lowered his voice.
“It’s an accounting mistake.
Give me until Monday.”
“The transfers were personally approved by you.”
Chloe stepped back again.
“Marcus, you said the company was doing well.”
“It is.
Stay out of this.”
My husband scrolled to another page.
“The money was sent to an account belonging to a property company.”
Marcus went pale.
I noticed the name on the screen and froze.
“That company is registered to Chloe,” I said.
Every eye turned toward her.
“I don’t know anything about it!” Chloe snapped.
“Marcus handles our finances.”
Then my husband opened the final attachment.
“These documents claim someone else authorized the transfers.”
He handed me the phone.
My name appeared beneath every payment—but the signature wasn’t mine.
Marcus backed away.
“You tried to put this on me?” I whispered.
Before he could answer, Chloe grabbed his sleeve.
“Tell her whose signature that really is.”
Marcus stared at her in horror.
My husband’s phone suddenly rang.
He checked the caller’s name, then looked directly at Marcus.
“The investigator has found the original documents.”
