Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Cracked Open

Just before we lit Emma's seventh birthday candles, my daughter collapsed.
The room erupted in panic.
But I noticed Rachel.
My sister was standing by the sink with a wineglass, and there was something almost satisfied in her expression.
Mark grabbed Emma's unicorn cup from the floor.
He smelled it.
Then his face hardened.
"Who made her drink?"
Rachel slowly raised her eyes.
"I did."
Doctors later found a powerful surgical sedative in Emma's bl00dstream.
Mark recognized it immediately.
He handled the same substance at work.
Then police discovered a half-empty vial hidden under his driver's seat.
Rachel claimed Mark had been beside her when she made the lemonade.
Mark said nothing.
The investigation uncovered gambling, massive debts, secret money borrowed from Rachel, and $300,000 missing from our savings.
Then an unknown caller gave me a warning.
"Mark has been selling the sedative."
Three days later, I met Malcolm in a Baltimore hotel room.
"Why did you buy it?"
He leaned forward.
"To kjll the man who owed me money."
Then he said one name.
Mark.
In that instant, I understood that Emma's collapse wasn't the beginning of the story.
It was the moment a hidden plan finally began to unravel.
