Chapter 2: Mommy Said Not to Tell

Ryan couldn't move.
His son — eight years old, still in his school clothes — was pushing crackers through the heating vent like he'd done it a hundred times before.
"Ethan." Ryan's voice came out barely above a whisper.
"How long?"
The boy looked up at his father, then at his mother.
His lip trembled.
"Mommy said not to tell."
Ryan turned to Caroline.
She was pressed against the kitchen wall, arms crossed over her chest, face the color of ash.
"Caroline.
Who is down there?"
She said nothing.
Her eyes filled but didn't spill.
He crossed the kitchen and pulled the vent cover away.
The smell hit him first.
Then he heard breathing.
Slow.
Shallow.
Real.
"Hello?" he called down.
A pause.
Then a small voice — a woman's voice — cracked from the dark.
"Please…
don't send me back."
Ryan stood up slowly and looked at his wife.
"How long has she been under our house?"
Caroline finally broke.
"Three weeks."
"Three—" He stopped.
Pressed both hands against the counter.
"Who is she, Caroline?"
Caroline opened her mouth.
Closed it.
Looked at Ethan.
Then she said the one name Ryan never expected to hear.

What Ryan learned next turned his entire marriage upside down.
