Chapter 2: What the Camera Remembered

The police arrived within eight minutes.

Two officers.

A man and a woman.

Brenda immediately put on a performance.

"Officer, this girl is unstable.

She threw hot gravy at herself and then attacked my son.

We're the ones who need protection."

I held up my thigh.

The skin was already blistering.

The female officer looked at it, then looked at Brenda.

"Ma'am, please step back."

Zachary tried a different approach.

He lowered his voice, calm and reasonable.

"My wife has been under a lot of stress.

We just got married.

She's having trouble adjusting."

I almost laughed.

"Show them the deed," I said.

"And then ask him why his mother had the door code."

Zachary's jaw tightened.

While the officers took statements, I went to pull up the camera footage on my phone.

That's when I froze.

The camera had been recording for months.

But the most recent files weren't from this morning.

They were from three weeks ago.

Before the wedding.

Zachary was in my apartment.

With Brenda.

Going through my drawers.

My files.

My documents.

And Brenda was on the phone with someone, saying:

"Once they're married, we move forward with the property transfer.

She won't even see it coming."

My hands were shaking so hard I nearly dropped the phone.

This was never about the gravy.

It was never about the house rules.

They had been planning this from the beginning.

What Charlotte found next in those recordings exposed something that could send them both to prison.
