Chapter 2: The Envelope on the Counter

I didn't scream.
I didn't cry.
I walked back upstairs, closed the bedroom door quietly behind me, and made one phone call.
Not to a friend.
Not to my mother.
To my lawyer.
"Send everything to the house," I told him.
"Today."
By noon, a courier arrived with a thick envelope.
I signed for it myself, set it on the kitchen counter, and waited.
Ethan and Chloe were still in the living room.
I could hear her laughing at something he said — that same quiet laugh he used to save for me.
When Ethan finally walked into the kitchen, he stopped when he saw the envelope.
"What is that?"
"Open it," I said.
He pulled out the first page.
His face went still.
"This is a financial audit," he said slowly.
"Thirty-one transfers," I replied.
"All from our joint account.
Her brother's startup.
Her parents' renovation.
The flights.
The hotel in San Francisco." I paused.
"The apartment, Ethan."
He looked up sharply.
"What apartment?" Chloe's voice came from the doorway.
And that was when I realized she didn't know about it either.
