Chapter 2: Isabella’s Final Warning

Vincent’s hand tightened around the cylinder.
“Play it,” he ordered.
Falk stepped between him and the piano.
“That recording is private.”
“It has my mother’s name on it.”
“And my father’s,” I said.
My voice shook, but I did not move.
“I deserve to hear it too.”
Falk suddenly reached for the cylinder.
Victor pulled it away.
“Careful,” Victor warned.
“Thomas hid this because Isabella was terrified of someone in the Moretti family.”
Vincent turned toward him.
“Who?”
Before Victor could answer, Vivian entered the hall.
The moment she saw the label, all the color left her face.
“That should have been destroyed,” she whispered.
Everyone stared at her.
“You knew about this?” Vincent demanded.
Vivian backed toward the door.
“Your mother was confused before her d3ath.
Nothing on that recording can be trusted.”
I placed the cylinder into the piano’s antique player.
A woman’s trembling voice filled the hall.
“My name is Isabella Moretti.
Thomas Marlow did not st0al the concerto.
I gave it to him because I knew they were coming for me.”
Vincent went still.
Then Isabella spoke one final sentence before the recording abruptly stopped.
“Vincent, the person who betrayed me is standing beside you.”
Vincent slowly turned—and Falk reached inside his coat.
