Chapter 2: The Name on the Document

Three transfers.

Each one sent to the same account.

I didn't recognize the number at first.

Then I searched it.

It was a joint savings account — opened six months ago — in Brandon's name and Hannah's.

He had been moving my money into their life.

My hands were shaking so hard I had to set the phone down.

I had skipped lunches.

Picked up night shifts.

Told myself it was temporary, that it was all for us.

And he had taken $4,200 of it and quietly built a future with someone else.

I called my bank.

The woman on the line confirmed the transfers were authorized through my own login.

—Someone accessed your account from a saved device, ma'am.

Brandon had my password.

I had trusted him with everything.

I sat in my car in that parking lot for a long time.

Then my phone rang.

It was Hannah.

I almost didn't answer.

But something made me.

—Rachel?

— Her voice was different now.

Quieter.

— I think we need to talk.

I found something in his bag tonight.

Something with your name on it.

She paused.

—There's a document here.

It looks like…

Rachel, did you ever sign anything giving Brandon access to a savings account?

My stomach dropped.

—No.

I never signed anything.

The silence that followed was the loudest thing I had ever heard.
