Chapter 2: What the Camera Caught

My father's smile finally broke.

"Whatever you think you found," Charles said, "I want my lawyer."

Dr.

Miller didn't flinch.

He reached into his coat pocket and placed a folded document on the edge of my bed — close enough that I could read the hospital letterhead at the top.

"We ran a full donor file review this morning," he said.

"Standard procedure after a living donation."

Brenda's hand tightened on Charles's sleeve.

"Your daughter's original blood work — the results from eight months ago — were altered before they reached our transplant committee."

The room went completely still.

"Altered how?" the officer asked.

Dr.

Miller looked at Brenda.

Not at Charles.

At Brenda.

Her polished smile disappeared for the first time since I had known her.

"Someone submitted a second set of results," Dr.

Miller said quietly.

"Results that made her look like the only viable match in the family."

I stared at the document.

My hands were shaking, but not from the surgery.

Alyssa slowly lowered her wrist.

The diamond bracelet caught the light one last time before she pressed it against her lap and looked away.

Charles turned to Brenda.

"What did you do?" he whispered.

She said nothing.

But her phone — still locked in her hand — lit up with a message.

I caught one word before she flipped it face-down.

*Destroy it.*

What Brenda was hiding goes far deeper than anyone in that room realized.
