Chapter 2: The Signature That Didn't Exist

Part 2 ⬇️
The room went completely still.
Richard's smile didn't recover.
It just…
dissolved.
Dr.
Evans reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded document.
He didn't hand it to my father.
He held it where everyone could see it.
"Your daughter signed a living donor consent form," he said.
"But our legal team flagged an irregularity this morning.
The independent counseling session required by law — the one confirming the donor faced no pressure — was signed off by a Dr.
Harlan."
He paused.
"Dr.
Harlan retired fourteen months ago.
He was not present at this hospital on the date of that signature."
Evelyn's hand dropped from Richard's sleeve.
Maya stopped turning her wrist.
"That means," Dr.
Evans continued, "this donor may not have given fully informed, uncoerced consent."
Richard's voice came out lower than I had ever heard it.
"She wanted to do it.
Ask her yourself."
Dr.
Evans looked at me then.
Not at my father.
At me.
"Did anyone tell you that you could say no?"
I opened my mouth.
And I realized — truly realized, in that moment — that no one ever had.
The officer stepped fully into the room.
Behind him, I heard a second set of footsteps in the hallway.
Someone else was coming.
Someone Richard had not expected.

What Dr.
Evans uncovered next — and who walked through that door — changes everything.
