Chapter 2: Five Words

Margaret's voice was calm.
That made it worse.
"This wedding will not continue."
The words landed like a stone dropped into still water.
Nobody moved.
Emily's smile didn't fall — it froze, locked in place like something painted on.
"Excuse me?" Emily said.
Margaret didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
"I said what I said."
She stepped away from the front pew and walked slowly toward the center aisle.
Her heels were quiet on the stone floor.
She stopped beside my wheelchair and placed one hand gently on my shoulder.
"Daniel." She looked at her son.
"Do you know what this woman did?"
Daniel's eyes moved to me.
He shook his head slowly.
"She carried your bride through a burning house.
She covered Emily's body with her own.
She breathed smoke so your future wife could breathe air." Margaret's hand tightened slightly on my shoulder.
"And this morning, before God and everyone who loves you, Emily asked her to hide in the back."
The silence in that church was unlike anything I had ever felt.
Then Emily turned to Daniel with tears already forming.
"Baby, she's exaggerating.
It wasn't like—"
"I was there," said a voice from the back of the church.
Everyone turned.
A woman I didn't recognize was standing in the doorway, holding something in her hands.

What that woman was holding changed everything — and Daniel's face went white the moment he saw it.
