Chapter 2: The Recording

PART 2

I opened the voice memo app.

Four years of calls.

Recorded.

Every time Phedra had managed to reach me from a neighbor's phone.

Every whispered conversation I hadn't understood until now.

I pressed play.

Phedra's voice came through the speaker, thin and frightened.

*"Damian, please…

I need you to change the account.

Send the money directly to me.

I can't get to my treatment.

She won't allow it."*

The room went completely still.

Then my own voice, from eight months ago:

*"Honey, are you sure everything's okay?

You sound different."*

A long pause.

Then Selina's voice in the background, low and sharp.

*"Tell him you're fine."*

Godfrey stepped back.

Selina's face went the color of ash.

"That's not what it sounds like," she said.

"It's exactly what it sounds like," I said.

I scrolled to the bank transfer records on my phone.

Nearly a hundred thousand dollars.

Then I opened a second screen — the oncology clinic's payment history Phedra had saved on a scrap of paper hidden inside her shoe.

Two payments.

Eight months apart.

Phedra pulled the folded paper from her sandal with shaking fingers and held it out to me.

That's when Godfrey's phone rang.

He looked at the screen and went pale.

"Don't answer that," Selina said quietly.

He answered it anyway.
