Chapter 2: The Handwriting She Hoped I'd Never Read

The handwriting on the back of the photograph was small and shaky.

But I could read every word.

*"She is not yours.

I'm sorry."*

My hands went cold.

I looked at Noah.

His eyes.

His chin.

The shape of his ears.

I had never once questioned it.

Vanessa saw my face and took a step toward the door.

"Let me explain—"

"Don't move."

She stopped.

"Where did this photograph come from?"

Silence.

I looked down at Lily.

"Sweetheart.

Who gave you this?"

Lily's voice was barely a whisper.

"The lady who used to come on Thursdays.

She said to keep it safe until you came home."

Vanessa's expression shifted.

Not guilt.

Something colder.

"That woman had no right—"

"What woman?" I said.

"What is her name?"

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

I opened the cabinet again and looked at the bottles.

No labels.

No dosage.

Nothing.

Noah had stopped crying.

He was too quiet now.

My chest tightened.

"What did you give him, Vanessa?"

She looked at the floor.

"He wouldn't sleep."

"That is not an answer."

She said nothing.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Careful.

"I've been waiting for you to come home.

There's something else you need to see.

Something she hid before you left for Seattle."
