Chapter 2: Someone Who Knew Everything

**— PART 2 —**

Natalie didn't say a word for the first ten minutes.

She just drove.

Then, quietly: "Did he call again?"

"Seventeen times," I said.

She nodded like that number didn't surprise her at all.

I stared out the window at the dark streets of Boston sliding past.

The navy dress was still on.

I hadn't thought to change.

I just…

left.

My phone buzzed on my lap.

Not Daniel this time.

Claire.

I almost didn't open it.

But I did.

*"He told me you knew and didn't care.

He told me you stopped loving him years ago.

I want you to know — I'm not sorry.

You were already gone."*

My hands went still.

She thought she had won something.

She had no idea what I had already done.

What she didn't know — what Daniel didn't know — was that Rebecca hadn't just advised me to secure documents.

She had filed.

That morning.

9:47 a.m.

While Daniel was at work.

While Claire was sending him messages.

While I was sitting in a lawyer's office in a city neither of them knew I'd visited.

Natalie glanced over.

"You okay?"

I set the phone face-down on my knee.

"I will be."

Then her phone rang through the car speakers.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman's voice filled the car — calm, professional.

"Is this Natalie Brennan?

I'm calling regarding Rachel Whitmore.

There's something she needs to know before tomorrow morning."

I sat up straight.

"Who is this?" I asked.

A pause.

"Someone who worked very closely with Daniel.

For a long time."
