Chapter 2: The Voice on the Other End

Through the cracked door, I watched the light under my bedroom door.
Arthur was in there.

A sharp gasp.
A stumble.
Then Arthur's voice—low and confused at first, then rising fast.

Something knocked against the nightstand.
Then silence.
Then his footsteps crossed the floor and my bedroom door swung open hard.

He didn't see me.

And my phone was still recording.
He pulled his own phone from his pocket and dialed.
"It went wrong," he whispered.
"She wasn't in the room.
I don't know where she went."
A pause.
Then a voice on the other end—calm, female, familiar.
My stomach dropped.
I knew that voice.

What Rebecca heard next stopped her cold — and the person on that phone was the last one she ever expected.
