Ethan grabbed my arm before I could read the first page.
"Put that down," he said.
"You don't understand what that is."
"Then explain it to me," I said.
"Right now."
He couldn't.
Barbara was still holding her cheek, but her eyes weren't on me anymore.
They were on the contract.
And the look on her face wasn't anger.
It was fear.
I pulled free and read the first clause out loud.
My father's property.
His savings account.
The lake house he left me when he passed.
All of it listed.
All of it signed over — not to me.
To Ethan's family trust.
Three years ago.
Before my father even got sick.
"You forged his signature," I said.
Ethan stepped closer.
"It was a legal arrangement.
Your father agreed —"
"My father couldn't write his own name by then.
You know that."
That's when the knock came.
Not at the front door.
At the bedroom window.
A man I had never seen before was standing outside.
Older.
Calm.
Holding a folder.
He looked directly at me and said four words through the glass.
"I have the originals."
Barbara made a sound I had never heard from her before.
Ethan went completely still.
