Chapter 2: What the Ashes Left Behind

Victor was discharged four days later.

His driver pulled up to the Brookline address.

Victor stepped out slowly, still sore, still expecting the front door, the garden, the life he had always taken for granted.

What he found was a black shell.

Charred beams.

Shattered windows.

The smell of ash still heavy in the cold morning air.

He stood on the sidewalk and didn't move for a long time.

Then his phone rang.

It was Rita.

"Victor, what's happening?

You said the house—"

"There is no house," he said quietly.

Teresa was watching from across the street.

When Victor finally looked up, she walked over slowly, arms crossed.

"She came back the next morning," Teresa said.

"Stood right where you're standing.

Took her photographs and left.

Calmly.

Like she was closing a chapter."

Victor's face went pale.

"Where is she?"

Teresa looked at him for a long moment.

"She also left something for you.

With me.

Said you'd come eventually."

She held out a small envelope.

Victor tore it open with shaking hands.

Inside was a single photograph — Victor asleep in his hospital bed, his phone on his chest — and one handwritten line:

*"I heard everything.

— S."*

Victor's legs went weak.

But that wasn't the worst part.

Folded behind the photograph was a document he recognized immediately.

His notary's letterhead.

His signature.

Except the property listed wasn't the Brookline house.

What was on that document — and what did Sarah do before she ever walked into that hospital?
