Chapter 2: The Letter With My Name On It

"Told me what?" I said.
My voice came out steadier than I felt.
Evelyn looked at the boys.
The one who had woken up was watching me with quiet, serious eyes.
My eyes.
My father's eyes.
"She came to me," Evelyn said.
"Three days after you left for that trip.
She sat in my kitchen, Marcus.
She told me you had already chosen someone else.

She said the engagement was being announced the week you returned."

"That's not true."
"She had a letter." Evelyn's voice dropped.
"It had your signature on it."
I stared at her.
"I never wrote any letter."
"I know that now." She looked down.
"I didn't know it then."
The boy beside her tugged her sleeve.
"Mama, who is he?"
Evelyn didn't answer right away.
She swallowed hard.
"She also told me," Evelyn continued quietly, "that if I didn't leave Chicago within forty-eight hours, she would make sure I lost the foundation contract.
My visa status.
Everything."
The ground felt unsteady beneath me.
"You were pregnant," I said.
It wasn't a question.
Her silence was the answer.
One of the boys leaned against her arm and closed his eyes again.
The other was still watching me.
Then my phone rang.
The screen lit up with one name: **Mom**.
