Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn't Mine

I stared at Hailey's message until the words blurred.

An architect.

A deposit.

A renovation I never agreed to.

My name was on that house.

My salary had paid the mortgage for six years.

And they had already called someone to start changing it — without a single word to me.

My phone rang.

Brandon.

I let it ring.

Then I called my lawyer instead.

She picked up on the second ring.

I kept my voice low so Skylar wouldn't hear.

"They may have used my information to apply for a construction loan," I said.

"Against the house."

A pause.

"Charlotte, if they filed paperwork with your signature — even a forged one — we need to move tonight."

I felt the café go quiet around me.

Skylar looked up from her plate.

"Mom?

Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, baby.

Keep eating."

But I wasn't fine.

Because when I opened my email, there was a message from a loan company I had never contacted — confirming a document submission made three days ago.

My name.

My address.

My income details.

And a signature that was almost mine.

But not quite.

I screenshot everything and forwarded it without a word.

Then Brandon's message came through.

*"Come home, Char.

We need to talk.

It's not what you think.

Just come home and I'll explain everything."*

I looked at my daughter finishing her meal.

And I thought — no.

You don't get to explain this away.
