Chapter 1: The Key My Stepdaughter Was Never Supposed to Find

I came home early from a business trip to find my daughter Maya sitting on her suitcase outside our front door, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
She was eight years old.
She still had her school backpack on.
My wife, Diana, stood in the doorway with her arms crossed, looking less like a stepmother and more like a landlord collecting rent from a tenant she'd already decided to evict.
"She's been nothing but difficult all week," Diana said before I could speak.
"I need a break.
She needs to go stay with your mother."
Maya looked up at me.
"Daddy, I didn't do anything."
I believed her.
What I didn't expect was what I found when I picked up her suitcase.
Something shifted inside the front pocket.
Something heavier than it should have been.
I unzipped it.
Inside, wrapped in one of Maya's old drawings, was a key.
Old.
Brass.
Engraved with a pattern I didn't recognize.
I glanced at Diana.
Her face changed in a way I had never seen before.
Not guilt.
Fear.
"Where did you get this?" I asked Maya.
She wiped her eyes.
"I found it in the basement.
Behind the wall with the loose brick."
Diana stepped forward.
"William—"
I held the key up between us.
"What exactly have you been hiding in this house?"
