Chapter 1: The Woman in the Satin Robe

"I came home after six weeks away and found my mother-in-law standing inside my apartment in a satin robe.
"Leave now or I'll call the police!
My son bought this apartment for me!"
For a moment, I honestly thought I had stepped into the wrong home.
My family photos were gone.
Her things were everywhere.
And in her hand was my late grandmother's favorite ceramic mug.
"Lorraine, what are you doing in my apartment?"
She laughed.
"Daniel bought this place for me.
You're trash, and I'm just taking the trash out."
I didn't scream.
I didn't call my husband.
I pulled out my phone.
"Building security?
This is Claire Bennett in Unit 12B.
There is an unauthorized intruder in my residence."
That wiped the smile off her face.
"You can't call security on me!
This is my home!"
Then the elevator chimed.
The building manager stepped out with two security guards.
For the first time, Lorraine looked nervous.
But just before they checked the property records, she said something that made me go cold:
"Daniel said he handled the title."

My husband had apparently done something while I was away.
I just didn't know what yet.
