Chapter 2: Someone Knew the Whole Time

Part 2 — continued below.

Ethan walked toward us slowly, like a man moving through water.
The string quartet had stopped playing.
Nobody told them to.
They just stopped.
"Are they..." He couldn't finish the sentence.
"Yes," I said.
"They are."
Mason tugged my hand.
"Mama, who is that man?"
The question hit the crowd like a stone dropped into still water.
I heard someone gasp.
A senator's wife pressed her hand to her chest.
Ethan crouched down to eye level.
His voice broke open.
"What are their names?"
"Mason.
Logan." I paused.
"And Ethan."
He flinched when he heard the last name.
Behind us, heels clicked hard and fast across marble.
Eleanor had come down from the balcony.
She stopped three feet away, her composure rebuilt just enough to be dangerous.
"This is a performance," she said quietly.
"You always did love a scene."
"Ask your son," I said.
"Ask him why I left without telling him."
Eleanor's eyes cut to Ethan.
Something passed between them.
Fast.
Private.
That was when I knew.
She already knew why I had left.
She had always known.
And Ethan's silence in that moment told me everything I had suspected for five years was true.
From the altar, Charlotte Bennett stood completely still, her bouquet hanging at her side, watching her wedding become something else entirely.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
No name.
Just four words.
*Show them the document.*
---
What document?
And who sent that message?
May you like
The truth behind why she really left is darker than anyone at that wedding expected.
