Chapter 2: The Moment the Hands Stopped Being Still

Julian's voice came out low and unsteady.
"Mother...
what did you do to her?"
Eleanor didn't flinch.
"Don't be foolish, Julian.
Look at her.
She's manipulating you."
"Those bruises—"
"Could have come from anywhere." Eleanor cut him off cleanly.
"She's been unstable for months.
You know this."
Julian looked at me.
Then back at her.
Something was shifting behind his eyes.
Eleanor stepped closer to the bed and lowered her voice.
"Sign the papers, Clara.
This ends quietly.
Or it ends very badly for you."
I said nothing.
I simply looked at the ventilation grate above her head.
Then Dominic's phone buzzed.
He glanced at the screen.
His face changed.
"Eleanor." His voice dropped to almost nothing.
"We need to step outside.
Now."
She turned sharply.
"What is it?"
He wouldn't answer in front of Julian.
But I already knew.
The hospital's security office had just received an anonymous notification.
Flagging unusual activity in the maternity wing.
Flagging the footage.
Eleanor straightened her jacket and looked at me one final time.
For just a moment, the confidence slipped.
"This isn't over," she said quietly.
But her hands were no longer still.
