Chapter 2: What She Was Carrying

Margaret's hand was still shaking when she answered him.
"She said to tell you she finally chose peace."
Daniel grabbed the ring from his mother's palm.
"Where did she go?"
"I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?
She was just here."
Margaret caught his arm before he could push through the crowd.
"Daniel.
Stop."
"Let go of me."
"There's something else."
Her voice dropped.
The music was still playing.
Vanessa was still standing near the dance floor, watching them with a careful expression that Margaret had never trusted.
"She had an envelope in her purse," Margaret said.
"She almost gave it to me.
Then she didn't."
"An envelope?"
"She held it for a long time before she walked away."
Daniel stared at her.
"What was in it?"
"I don't know.
But Daniel—" Margaret's voice broke slightly.
"The way she was holding it.
Like it was something she had been waiting a long time to give you."
He turned toward the exit.
Vanessa stepped forward.
"Daniel, the photographers are still—"
"Not now."
He was already moving.
Outside, the hired car was gone.
He stood on the empty sidewalk, the ring cold in his fist, and realized he had no idea where his wife had gone.
Or what she had been carrying all night that he never gave her the chance to say.
