Chapter 2: The Envelope Beneath the Safe

Clare's hand was shaking as she lifted the first page from the envelope.

It was a legal document.

Dense.

Formal.

But the words at the top were clear enough.

*Deed of Relinquishment — Mercer House Hospitality.*

"He made you sign away your inheritance," Clare said.

Eleanor didn't deny it.

"He came with two attorneys and a check for fifty thousand dollars." Her voice was steady, but her hands weren't.

"He said if I ever contacted anyone connected to the Mercer name, the money would be clawed back and he would make sure I lost this store."

Clare stared at the signature again.

Harrison's.

Witnessed.

Dated eleven days after William's funeral.

"Your father left you something in the will?"

"Equal shares," Eleanor said quietly.

"That was what William wanted.

Equal shares between Harrison and me."

Clare felt the room tilt slightly.

Equal shares of a hospitality group now worth over forty million dollars.

"Does anyone else know?"

Eleanor hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

She walked to the back of the store and returned holding a second envelope — smaller, older, the paper gone soft at the edges.

"Our father sent this to me six months before he passed." She didn't open it.

She just held it.

"He said Harrison had already found out about me.

And that he was afraid of what Harrison might do before the estate was settled."

Clare's throat tightened.

"Afraid?"

Eleanor looked at her directly.

"He wrote that he had changed the will.

And that he had given a copy to someone Harrison would never think to look for."

The brass key in Clare's bag suddenly felt heavier than it had all morning.

---

What does that key open — and what did William hide before he d*ed?

The truth is darker than Clare imagined.
