Chapter 2: Four Words From a Stranger

Part 2 ⬇️
I stood completely still and listened to his footsteps fade.
Then I smiled again.
Wider this time.
Derek had locked the door from the outside.
What he didn't know was that I had switched the lock mechanism three weeks before the wedding.
A locksmith I trusted.
A favor no one in this house knew about.
I turned the interior handle.
The door opened.
I stepped into the hallway — and nearly walked straight into Brenda.
She stared at me.
I stared back.
"How did you—" she started.
"I told you," I said quietly.
"I needed to wash my face."
Her expression shifted.
Something behind her eyes flickered.
Not triumph this time.
Fear.
I walked past her toward the stairs.
Then my phone buzzed again.
I stopped.
The second message was from a number I didn't recognize.
Four words.
*He did it before.*
My hand tightened around the phone.
Before I could respond, I heard Derek's voice rise from the floor below — sharp and urgent, speaking to someone I couldn't see.
He said a name.
May you like
A woman's name.
Not mine.
