Chapter 2: The Photograph He Recognized

Ryan couldn't move.

He knelt down slowly, his eyes fixed on the little girl crouched behind the wall.

She was thin.

Too thin.

Her clothes were worn and her hair was tangled, but her eyes — her eyes looked exactly like his.

"What's your name?" he asked, his voice barely holding.

"Mia," she whispered.

He turned to his wife.

"Who is she?"

His wife, Sandra, pressed herself against the doorframe.

Her face had gone completely white.

"Ryan, I can explain—"

"Who.

Is.

She."

Sandra's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Then Lily tugged at Ryan's sleeve.

"Daddy, I've been giving her my snacks.

She said she was hungry.

She said she wasn't allowed to make noise."

Ryan stood up slowly and looked at Sandra with something colder than anger.

"How long has this child been living in our walls?"

Sandra finally broke.

"Three years."

The number hit him like a physical blow.

Three years.

Mia had been hidden in their home for three years.

While he worked.

While he slept.

While he believed his marriage was real.

He looked back at Mia.

She was watching him with those familiar eyes, clutching a small worn photograph against her chest.

He recognized the photograph.

It was him.
