Chapter 2: The Name in Fresh Ink

PART 2

Jorge didn't dial one number.

He dialed three.

I sat in that locked office listening to him speak in a low, controlled voice — words like "dormant federal account," "flagged transaction history," and "forty-one years of undisclosed activity."

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

When he finally hung up, I asked the only question I could form.

"Jorge.

How much?"

He wouldn't look at me directly.

"Arthur…

the balance in this account is just under nine million dollars."

The room tilted.

"That's impossible," I said.

"Lucia ran a small book restoration shop.

She never—"

"She didn't earn it," Jorge said quietly.

"It was deposited.

In structured payments.

Over four decades.

By someone else."

Someone else.

I thought of Sergio's hand on my shoulder that morning.

His legal team.

The power-of-attorney documents already drafted before my wife was even in the ground.

"Jorge." My voice came out barely above a whisper.

"Did Sergio's firm have any connection to this account?"

Jorge picked up the ledger again.

He turned to the last page — one I hadn't seen yet.

There was a name written there in fresh ink.

Not Lucia's handwriting.

He turned it toward me slowly.

I stopped breathing.

What that name revealed changed everything Arthur thought he knew about his wife — and his family.
