Chapter 2: The Word That Destroyed Everything

My mother slid the folder across the table without a word.
I opened it slowly.
The first page was the forged guarantee agreement — my signature, perfectly copied, dated three months before I even knew the loan existed.
The second page stopped my breath.
It was an email chain.
Between Teresa and Vance.
The oldest message was dated fourteen months ago — four months before I got pregnant.
Teresa had written: *"She'll never check.
She trusts you completely.
Just get her license and a utility bill.
Ryan knows someone who can handle the rest."*
Vance had replied with one word: *"Done."*
I sat there holding Amelia against my chest, reading that word over and over.
Done.
He hadn't been kept in the dark.
He had been the one who handed them the door.
My mother placed her hand over mine.
"There's more," she said quietly.
She turned to the next page.
It was a second loan application — still pending — for $200,000 more.
My name was on it again.
So was Amelia's.
Our four-day-old daughter was already listed as a future asset guarantor.
I heard Vance's footsteps in the hallway.
He stopped at the kitchen doorway and looked at the open folder on the table.
For the first time all night, he said absolutely nothing.
---
What Lauren found on the next page of that folder changed everything — and Teresa had no idea what was already waiting at her door.
