Chapter 2: The Envelope

Michael called on a Thursday morning.

I let it ring.

He called again.

I picked up on the fourth attempt.

"Dad, my key card stopped working at the office.

And the gate code at the house isn't going through.

What's happening?"

I said nothing for a moment.

"Robert?" he tried.

First name.

He only did that when he was nervous.

"I know what happened in the bridal corridor, Michael."

Silence.

Then: "Dad, that's not — Cassandra was upset, it was a misunderstanding—"

"I have the footage on a flash drive sitting on my desk right now."

More silence.

Longer this time.

"We should talk about this in person," he finally said.

His voice had changed.

Quieter.

Careful.

"My attorney will be in touch."

I ended the call.

Ellen was standing in the kitchen doorway.

She had heard everything.

Her eyes were wet.

Not from sadness.

Something else.

"Robert," she said softly.

"There's something I haven't told you yet."

She walked to the counter and picked up an envelope.

Her hands were trembling.

"Cassandra came to see me.

Alone.

Before the wedding."

I stared at her.

"She told me if I showed up that day…

she would make sure I regretted it."
