Chapter 2: The Question Nobody Else Thought to Ask
Nora went completely still.
Then, very slowly, she nodded.
The room shifted.
Dr.
Caldwell looked up from his tablet.
The other nurse stopped writing.
Sarah didn't move.
Her voice stayed low and even.
"Does it move more when the light is bright?"
Nora nodded again — faster this time, like someone had finally spoken her language after hours of silence.
Sarah stood.
She turned to the tray she had brought in and picked up a small handheld light — not an otoscope, just a penlight.
She held it several inches from Nora's ear.
Not inside.
Not close enough to frighten her.
She watched.
Three seconds.
Nora's hand flew up.
Sarah clicked the light off.
Nora's hand slowly came down.
Sarah turned to face Dr.
Caldwell directly.
"There's something alive in her ear canal.
It's phototropic — moving toward the light every time.
That's why she keeps reaching up.
That's why she can't hold still.
She isn't fighting the exams because she's scared."
She paused.
"She's trying to protect whatever is in there from being pushed deeper."
The silence that followed lasted only a second — but inside that second, Daniel Mercer's face changed completely.
Caldwell set his tablet down.
"How did you—"
"I grew up on a farm," Sarah said quietly.
And then she asked for something no one in that room had thought to request in four hours of examinations.
What Sarah asked for — and what they found inside Nora's ear — is something nobody in that hospital has forgotten.
