Chapter 2: The Call He Wasn't Supposed to Hear

Part 2 — continued below 👇
---
The man I called was my former senior partner, Richard Hale.
He picked up on the second ring.
"Grace.
What's wrong?"
I told him everything in under three minutes.
He didn't interrupt once.
When I finished, he said quietly, "Don't touch anything in that house.
Don't move a single account.
And do not let Daniel know you called me."
I hadn't even thought about the house yet.
But Richard had.
"There's something you need to know," he said.
"Six weeks ago, Daniel came to our firm.
He was asking about asset protection structures.
Quietly.
He said it was routine business planning."
The room tilted.
"He was already planning this before Noah was born?"
Richard didn't answer right away.
That silence told me everything.
I was still sitting in a hospital gown, still bleeding, still waiting to hear if my son would be okay — and Daniel had been preparing for months.
When I finally looked up, Vivian was still in the doorway.
She had heard every word.
Her expression had changed.
The smug smile was gone.
She took one step toward me and said, very softly, "Grace.
There are things about that firm you don't understand yet."
I stared at her.
"What does that mean, Vivian?"
She opened her mouth — and then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen, and the color left her face completely.
It was Daniel.

What did Vivian know — and why did Daniel call her at that exact moment?
