Chapter 2: The Name Carol Already Knew

At the hospital, they sat me in a wheelchair and walked on either side of me like they were family who cared.

My mother-in-law spoke first.

"She tripped on the back step.

We told her to be more careful."

The nurse looked at me.

I looked at the floor.

They took me into a room and asked my husband to wait outside.

He didn't want to go.

The nurse asked him again, firmly, and he finally stepped back.

The moment the door closed, I reached into my pocket.

My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped it.

"I have recordings," I whispered.

"Months of them.

Dates.

His voice.

Her voice.

Everything."

The nurse went very still.

She looked at the phone.

Then at my stomach.

Then back at my face.

"How long?" she asked quietly.

"Since I found the phone," I said.

"I didn't know who would believe me."

She didn't say anything for a moment.

Then she stepped to the door and said something low to someone in the hallway.

When she came back, there was another woman with her.

Older.

A badge I didn't recognize.

"My name is Carol," the woman said.

"I need you to stay calm.

Can you do that?"

I nodded.

"Does your husband know what's on that phone?"

"No," I said.

Carol looked at the nurse.

Something passed between them.

Then Carol's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen and her expression changed completely.

"That's not possible," she said under her breath.

She turned away so I couldn't hear.

But I caught one word.

A name.

My mother-in-law's name.

What Carol found out about that name changed everything.
